During our process, one of the questions we ask is “Are you remodeling to sell or to stay?” If the answer is “not sure” or “to sell”, we encourage our clients to renovate to their OWN tastes and style.
Why?
First, plans may change. And why would you want to continue to reside in a home that doesn’t feel like yours? According to a Redfin survey, on average, people are staying in their homes five years longer than they did ten years ago. (SEE OUR BLOG ARTICLE ON EMPTY NESTING)
Secondly, to sell your home, whether in the near future or a few years down the road, if you try to figure out what the trends will be to have your home sell faster (i.e. what layout, lighting, flooring, finishes, etc. will be popular with buyers), you may end up missing the mark.
And finally, buyers should have the “home” vibe… if you’re living in a space that isn’t “home” for you, they’ll pick up on that.
You should focus on remodels / renovations that make YOU feel at home… and then others will, too.
